Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): Are You Showing Up in AI Answers?
Is your business showing up in AI answers? What Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is, how it differs from SEO, and how an AI visibility audit measures whether ChatGPT and Google recommend you.
The short version
- Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) helps AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini find, understand, and recommend your business.
- AEO builds on SEO. The same crawlable, well-structured site helps both.
- Being mentioned in an AI answer and being cited as a source are different results. Track both.
- An AI visibility audit tests real customer questions, scores every answer, and shows which competitors AI recommends instead.
- AI answers change from run to run, so visibility needs ongoing monitoring.
Are you showing up in AI answers? Most businesses have no idea. They check Google rankings and never ask ChatGPT about their own industry.
We hadn’t either, at first. When we launched this site in October, we started tracking 28 questions in ChatGPT. It mentioned Sprung Interactive in 2 of them, and both times the question already had our name in it. Humbling, for a company that sells this service.
That’s the problem answer engine optimization solves. Here’s what AEO is, how it differs from SEO, and how to find out whether AI recommends your business or someone else’s.
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your business into the answers AI tools give. Someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google for a recommendation, and the tool writes an answer instead of handing back ten blue links. AEO makes sure that answer can find you, describe you correctly, and name you.
You’ll see other names for it too. AI SEO, AI search optimization, and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) all describe roughly the same work. We use AEO because it says what the job is: be the answer.
SEO vs. AEO: what’s the difference?
SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of search results. AEO aims to get your business into the written answer itself. With SEO, the reader still picks a link; with AEO, the AI tool has already done the picking. Big difference.
The two work together. AI tools lean on the same things search engines do: pages they can crawl, clear headings, accurate business details, and other sites that talk about you. A site with weak SEO rarely does well in AI search. Good SEO alone can still leave gaps, though, because AI tools want direct answers to specific questions, and many sites never write them down.
Why does AI search visibility matter now?
Because that’s where people are asking. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly users (opens in a new tab) in February 2026. Google has folded AI Overviews and AI Mode into one search experience, and AI Mode alone passed 1 billion monthly users (opens in a new tab).
Those answers change how people click. Pew Research found (opens in a new tab) that Google users clicked a regular search result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it didn’t. They clicked a source inside the summary in just 1% of visits. If the summary recommends your competitor, a lot of people never scroll down to find you.
Mentioned or cited: which one counts?
Both count, and they mean different things. A mention is when the answer names your business. A citation is when the answer also links to your website as a source.

We score every AI answer one of three ways. Cited means you’re named and linked to a page on your site. Named means you’re mentioned without a link. Absent means you’re not there at all, and we write down who showed up instead.
Citations tell you which of your pages AI tools trust. Mentions without citations usually mean the AI learned about you from somewhere else, like a directory, a review site, or an article. That’s good, but you don’t control what those sources say.
What does an AI visibility audit check?
An AI visibility audit is where AEO starts. It answers the central question with evidence: are you showing up in AI answers, and if not, why not? A good one covers seven things.
- Whether you appear in AI answers for the questions your customers ask
- Which competitors AI recommends instead, and how often
- Whether AI tools cite your website as a source
- How accurately AI describes your company, services, location, and hours
- Which customer questions are missed opportunities with no good page to answer them
- Whether technical issues block AI tools from reading your site
- How your site structure, schema markup, content, and SEO affect all of the above
The technical part matters more than people expect. A robots.txt file that blocks AI crawlers can keep a site out of AI answers no matter how good the writing is. So can pages that only load content with JavaScript. Or a missing sitemap. Or weak schema markup, the code that labels your business name, services, and location so machines don’t have to guess.
How we run an AI answer analysis
We start by building a list of 50 to 75 real questions your customers ask, in plain language, checked against search demand data. You approve the list before anything runs.
Then we run every question on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini. Each one runs twice, on separate days, from a logged-out session where the platform allows it, with the location set to your market. AI answers vary between runs, so one test isn’t enough to trust.
Every answer gets scored as cited, named, or absent, and we record every competitor it names. That gives you a citation share for you and for each competitor, by platform and by topic. We also map each question to the page on your site that should answer it, and flag the ones with no page at all.
For ongoing AI citation tracking, we use Semrush, including its AI Visibility Toolkit and ChatGPT position tracking, alongside the manual runs. You get a findings report, the full results spreadsheet, and a walkthrough with your team. An AEO audit usually takes about three weeks.
How do you get your business recommended by ChatGPT?
Nothing guarantees a recommendation. Good AEO raises your odds a lot, and most of it comes down to a few habits.
Answer questions directly. Open each page with a plain statement of what you do and who it’s for, and use headings that match the questions people ask. Then add schema markup for your organization, services, and location, and keep your name, address, hours, and services the same everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile, and directories.
Let the crawlers in. Check that your robots.txt allows the AI crawlers you want, and that your content shows up without JavaScript. And get talked about. Reviews, directory listings, and articles that mention you give AI tools more places to learn who you are.
Why does AI visibility need ongoing monitoring?
AI tools change their models and sources constantly, and the same question can get a different answer next week. A single check tells you where you stand today, and that’s all it tells you.
That’s why AEO needs ongoing monitoring. Measure the same way every time. Keep the same questions, platforms, and run conditions, and compare results over time. That’s how you see whether a new page, a schema fix, or a new directory listing moved anything. We recheck AI answers three weeks after an audit, and ongoing tracking is available as an add-on.
Are you showing up in AI answers?
Start with the questions your customers ask. We’ll run your customers’ questions through the major AI tools, show you who gets recommended, and give you a prioritized list of what to fix.

Frequently asked questions
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the work of getting your business into the answers AI tools give, in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini. It helps those tools find your business, describe it correctly, and recommend it by name.
What is the difference between SEO and AEO?
SEO ranks your pages in a list of search results, and the reader picks a link. AEO gets your business into the written answer itself. They work together: a crawlable, well-structured site helps both.
How do I find out if AI recommends my business?
Run the questions your customers actually ask through ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini, and score each answer as cited, named, or absent. An AI visibility audit does this with a fixed set of 50 to 75 questions, each run twice on separate days.
What is the difference between being mentioned and being cited by AI?
A mention means the AI answer names your business. A citation means it also links to your website as a source. Citations show which of your pages AI tools trust.
Is AEO the same as GEO or AI SEO?
Mostly. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), AI SEO, and AI search optimization all describe getting your business into AI-generated answers.
How long does an AI visibility audit take?
Usually about three weeks, from the approved question list to the findings report. We recheck AI answers three weeks after the audit, and ongoing tracking is available as an add-on.
